Los Angeles based, New York born and bred duo Swimsuit Issue posses the rare gift of creating a sound that both punches you in the gut and tears at your emotions with their infectious alternative rock/pop singles. Featuring Miles Garber (who you may recognize as a prominent male model) and Dave Gagliardi (who also doubles as the guitarist for Trash Talk), the band formed in 2014 after meeting outside of an art show on the Bowery. Their debut single, “Look Now” is equal parts intimate and edgy, with the young duo radiating a full spectrum of emotions—pain, sadness, confusion—all impeccably delivered through Garber’s effortless somber croon.
In contrast to the fast pace of the digital age, Swimsuit Issue took their time; over 2 years since they formed to hone in and perfect their sound. Reminiscent of the glory days of when 120 Minutes used to invade our TVs, the band found a fan in Cat Power (a.k.a. Chan Marshall) through just an unreleased demo that was sent to her via a friend. “It was the most ridiculous thing ever,” recalls Garber, “We had done a demo. It was my first time in a studio, and I had sent it to friends I trusted. Three days later, they were like, ‘Hey, so we sent it to our friend Chan, she really likes it, and she wants you to open for her tomorrow.’ I was like, ‘Cool, who’s Chan?’”.
Swimsuit Issue’s melancholy themes are often skillfully veiled in pop metaphors. Already championed early on by tastemakers such as W, Milk Media, NOISEY and V Magazine, the band have created a sound that is captivating and relatable with the music that accompanies them.
With the release of “Look Now,” there’s no doubt that Swimsuit Issue is a name you are going to be hearing a lot in 2018. Stay tuned for more music and live dates coming soon.
